The EDM is one of the most accurate manufacturing processes that are available for both simple and complex geometries. The process is highly accurate and yet not costly. It is desirable whenever high accuracy and fast turn-around time is required. The EDMs at PPI have tolerance level down to 0.000080”. While three of these machines are wire EDM machines, one of them is the EDM current drilling machine. The 4th axis EDM (with PPI) has excellent capabilities in terms of superior finish and perfect surface. Since the head on all the machines can fully articulate independent of each other, it gives these machines the ability to produce parts that one does not normally associate with EDM.
The EDM drill enables the machine to cut very fine holes in difficult conditions. This form of drilling is generally not possible to be carried out by other machines. Small hole EDMs (hole popper) are used to drill holes into the leading and trailing edges of turbine blades that are used in jet engines. The other tasks where this is used include the creation of microscopic orifices for fuel system components and spinnerets for synthetic fibers such as rayon besides other applications.
